Chewables - Know your requirements!
Over the last two years I have been working on building up my selection of chewable items. I know that chewing and sucking on objects is common and my goal is to have a product to suit the needs of everyone.
When purchasing chewables, it is key to know what kind of chewer the person that will be using the product is. Whether the user will be you, your child or another relative or friend you need to consider their requirements. If you are new to the sensory world you may not know what to choose. When getting started, my suggestion is that you look at the kind of items currently being chewed.
Does the person only chew clothing or towels? If so, then they may prefer the feeling of fabric chewables. If they are a sucker, light biter or nibbler then an absorbent fabric chewable like the terry chew bands might be ideal. However, if they prefer the feel of the silicone, any product would be suitable. If they are a hard chewer, they likely require a firm and thick style such as the tough stix.
Occasionally I receive messages from people that do not know what their child needs, so they guess (usually buying the smallest or cheapest chews) and then complain that it was chewed through. I want to assure my customers that all of my products are of the highest quality and go through quality testing as well as safety testing. I give my chewables to my own child who is more of a sucker and nibbler and has been using the same ones for a couple of years now and has never chewed through anything. If you choose a necklace with a small pendant and they chew through the bit with the hole in it to loop the cord through, then a necklace is not for them, they require something more solid.
However, remember that no chewable item is indestructible. If they were, they would not be safe to chew on!
If the person has never used any chewables before, I advise not to just buy lots of colours of the same item in case they don't like it or it doesn't work for them. They may need to try a few different styles until they find what works for them.
And if you are ever unsure what to try or have any questions about any of my products, I am always happy to help you work it out prior to purchase - contact me.
*If your child is young enough to choke on a tiny piece of silicone, you should not be leaving them alone with any kind of chewable. Please note that all chewables state this on the product page.
